INTRODUCTION by Frederick S. Weiser

a ' . : sef

The problem facing the genealogist of a Mennonite family is a great ones a central tenet of the Mennonite faith has been a shunning of everything pertaining to the present life, and this included the keeping of records in the churches. Thus it is exceedingly difficult to present a complete record of such a family,, Only through extended searching can one be compiled.

This collection of data concerning the Harnish Family is therefore far from complete. A few introductory, explanatory notes must be made. First of all, this history was largely compiled by Rev. W. E. Francis, employed for that purpose by the Harnish Reunion Association about 1926.

.Rev. Francis never finished his work, for the depression intervened, but we are grateful for what he did a remarkable job when one considers the frequency with which certain Christian names were used and the great number of descendants living in Lancaster County alone. Further, this represents only those Harnishes living in southeastern Lancaster County--the old Conestoga and Lampeter Townships for the most part. Another rich collection concerning Samuel Harnish, richer in some aspects because of a Reformed church affiliation in this branch, av/aits editing by other historians. Whether Samuel was related to the family in question is uncertain. It was assumed by the Rev. Francis and the association that Samuel was a nephew of Martin and search on both lines was conducted simultaneously for that reason.

These records were procurred by Mrs. W. E. Harnish from Miss Katharine Hoffman, former secretary of the Reunion Associ¬ ation in 19kSs and from Robert Harnish, also active in the association, in 1953= Miss Hoffman and Robert Harnish were descendants of Samuel Harnish. Because of the value of the records an attempt has been made to tie together some of the loose ends and present this data to the public.

It is offered, however, as an incomplete compilation, for whose accuracy the editors do not wish to be held accountable. Where errors have been discovered they were corrected, but it has been impossible to check completely sources used nearly thirty years ago.

Appreciation is due to certain individuals who helped the present compilers; Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Heisey, Mrs. J. L. Shaeffer, Mr. Jack Kraft, Mr. and Mrs. John L. Kraft, Mrs. Lavinia Landis, Miss Elizabeth Neiman and Miss Anna Hershey and Mr. George Zendt, whose personal generosity has been most greatly appreciated.

The editors invite all additions, corrections, and correspondence .

MARTIN HARNISH, THE IMMIGRANT

There is a tradition among the Harnishes, cropping out at different places, that their immigrant ancestor entered America by way of the port of New York. A day spent in the quarters of the New York Historical Society, during which there w as brought to me by the curator all the sources of information he thought could bear on the subject, failed to bring to light the name of any Harnish who arrived at that port. This fact, however, does not in any way discredit the tradition. The curator knew of no list of immigrants who arrived at New York such as the list we have of arrivals at Philadelphia. Through him, however, we secured very valuable information about the Germans in Pennsyl¬ vania.

We quote from Appendix X of Rupp’s Thirty Thousand Names , from an account by Peter Kalm ( 17l5**1779"H a Swedish natural philosopher and traveler, who says: "Though the province of New York has been inhabited by Europeans much longer than Pennsylvania, yet it is not by far so populous as that colony.

This cannot be ascribed to any particular discouragement arising from the nature of the soil, for that is pretty good; but, I am told of a very different reason, which I will mention here.

"In the reign of Queen Anne, about the year 1709, many Germans came hither who got a tract of land from the English government which they might settle. After they had lived there some time and had built houses, and made cornfields and meadows, their liberties and priviliges were infringed, and, under several pretenses, they were repeatedly deprived of parts of their land. This at last aroused the Germans. They returned violence for violence and beat those who thus robbed them of their possessions. But these proceedings were looked upon in a very bad light by the government. The most active people among the Germans being the utmost vigor of the law. This, however, so far exasperated the rest, that the greater part of them left their houses and fields, and went to settle in Pennsylvania. There they were exceedingly well received, got a considerable tract of land, and were indulged in great priviliges which were given them forever.

The Germans, not satisfied at being themselves removed from New York, wrote to their relations and friends, and advised them, if they ever Intended to come to America, not to go to New York, where the government had shown itself so unequitable. This advice had such influence that the Germans who afterwards went In great numbers to North America constantly avoided New York and always went to Pennsylvania.

It sometimes happened that they were forced to go on board of such ships as were bound for New York, but they were scarce got on shore, when they hastened on to Pennsylvania, in sight of all the inhabitants of New York. "--Peter Kalm’s Travels in America, in ITU? and I7I4-8, Volume 1, page 270, 271..

1

We have found no reason for doubting the tradition among the Harnishes, be they descendants of Martin Harnish, that their ancestor came in by way of New York; and then "hastened on to Pennsylvania, in sight of all the inhabitants of New York:."

We are the more willing to accept the tradition because we can find no records of his arrival at the port of, Philadelphia.

(Regular records of ship passengers arriving at Phila¬ delphia were not required to be kept until 1727. At that time such numbers of German, and other, immigrants poured into Philadelphia that the Quakers became alarmed lest their colony become more German than English. Therefore, each ship bringing immigrants thereafter had to turn over to the authorities a list of passengers j and the passengers had to take an oath of allegiance. Both the captains' lists and the lists of those taking the oaths are often available after 1727. It is entirely possible, therefore that Martin entered by way of Philadelphia. )

Let us now turn to "An Act Passed Anno Regni Georgii II, Regis Magnae Britanniae, Franciae, et Hibemiac, tertio, October Ilf* l?29oM The following is quoted from I. Daniel Rupp’s History of -Lancaster County, 1 81+1}. , pages 121 to 128.

"WHEREAS, By encouragement given by the Honorable William Penn, Esq. plate Proprietary and Governor of the Province of Pennsvl vania, and by permission of his Majesty, King GEORGE the First, of blessed memory, and his predecessors, Kings and Queens of England, &c . divers Protestants, who were subjects to the Emporer of Germany, a Prince in amity with the Crown of Great Britain, transported themselves and estates into the province of Pennsylvania, between the years one thousand seven hundred, and one thousand seven hundred and eighteen: and since they came hither have contributed very much to the enlargement of the British Empire, and to the raising and improving sundry commodities fit for the markets of Europe, and have always behaved themselves religiously and peaceably, and have paid a due regard and obedience to the laws and Government of this province^ And whereas, Many of said persons, to wit, Martin Meylin, Hans Graaf, and others, all of Lancaster County, in the said province, in demonstration of their affection and zeal for his present Majesty’s person and Government, qualified themselves by taking the qualification, and subscribing the declaration directed to be taken and subscribed by the several acts of parliment, made for the security of his Majesty’s person and Government, and for preventing the dangers which may happen by Popish Recusants, &cc and thereupon, have humbly signified to the Governor and Representatives of the freemen of this province, in General Assembly, that they have purchased and do hold lands of the proprietary, and others, his Majesty’s subjects within this province, and have likewise represented

«> 2 °

their great desire of being made partakers of those privileges which th9 natural born subjects of Great Britain do enjoy within this province; and it being just and reasonable, that those persons who have bor.a fide purchased lands, and who have given such testimony of their affection and obedience to the Crown of Great Britain should as well be secured in the enjoy¬ ment of their estates, as encouraged in their laudable affection and zeal for the English constitution;

'‘Be It enacted by the Hon,, Patrick Gordon, ^sqa ,

Lieut ."IJovernor of the province of Pennsylvania, &c , by and with the advice and consent of the freemen of the said province, in General Assembly met, and by the authority of the same. That =>=— Martin Harnish all of Lancaster

county, be, and shall be to all intents and purposes deemed, taken, and esteemed. His Majesty :s natural born subjects of this province of Pennsylvania, as if they, and each of them had been born within the said province; and shall and may, and every one of them shall and may, within this province, take, receive, enjoy, and be entitled to all rights, privileges and advantages of natural bom subjects, as fully, to all intents, constructions and purposes, whatsoever, as any of his Majesty's natural born subjects of this province, can, do or ought to enjoy, by virtue of their being His Majesty's natural born subjects of His Majesty’s said province of Penns yl vania

From the foregoing act we ascertain that Martin Harnish arrived in Lancaster county between 1700 and 1718, that he had purchased laud prior to 1/2 and in that year, according to the act quoted, became a citizen of the province of Pennsylvania and a subject of George II, King of Great Britain. Furthermore, we are informed that he was a law=ablding citizen and an asset in the upbuilding of the province.

In a list of settlers in Lancaster County before 1730, divided under three dates, 1700, 1712, and 1719, Rupp in an appendix to his '"Thirty Thousand Names’1" on page 437? lists Martin Harnish near the beginning of the 1719 list. He may very properly be classed with the charter Mennonites of the settlement.

THE FIRST HARNISH FARM

The document of naturalization states that each of the petitioners was in possession of some land. Actually, non© was warranted unto Martin Harnish until August 22, I73I4., ^hen took a warrant for 30Q acres in Salisbury Township, between Conestoga Creek and Pequea Creek (Patent Book A-15-f>6o, Land Office Records, Harri sbur g , Pa.) This warrant, however was vacated and the land patented in 1751 to Jacob Rubely. On October 174^5 L,© took another warrant for 300 acres in Conestoga Township. As will be seen he sold half of this to his son Jacob Harnish. (Patent Book A— T)| -f j l| . ) He was listed in Conestoga Assessments of 1724-1725, 1725-1726, and 1726-1727

- 3 -

(Lancaster County Historical Society Papers, v, 20, p* l68 and 170-180, 183-5? 189.) At the time of his death, therefore, he possessed half of a 300-acre warrant, unpatented, tract of* land in Conestoga, where he undoubtedly created a home on what was then the frontier of Pennsylvania. Some of this land likely remained in the hands of his descendants until recently and there may still be some part of it so held today.

After Lancaster County was organized in 1729? and town¬ ships established, several petitioners requested licenses to "sell rum by the small." Licenses were granted May 1730, to these persons, among them Martin Harnist, vhose license cost him 20 shillings. (Rupp!s History of Lancaster County, 1844* page 254, 255.)

The Death of Martin Hamish

Martin Hamish died between December 26, 1744s when he sold half of his warrant to his son Jacob, (Patent Book A-l4“44)» the record stating "and soon thereafter died intestate" and February 13? 1744/5 when -an inventory in his esta.te was filed. On March 25* Jacob, identified as the eldest son, appeared at an

Orphans' Court consisting of Edward Smout, Emanuel Carpenter,

James Gillespie, and Samuel Anderson, and proposed to take his father :s land and pay shares to the other children. Carpenter,

John Postle wal t Jacob ?!ver and Martin Myley were appointed to appraise me estate ana return tneir valuation at the next court (Orphans Court Dockett, 1742-1766, pQ 38) On May 6, 1748, before an Orphans Court consisting of Smout, Carpenter, Gillespie, and Conrad Weiser, the appraisers reported that they had valued the estate at 315 pounds. Jacob Hamish was then ordered to give security for payment of the shares to the other children and hold the land. (Orphans Court Dockett, 1742-1766, pa 39 )

Thereupon, May 18, 1748? Jacob petitioned John and Richard Penn, the Proprietaries of the province to grant him patent to the 225 acres of the warrant. He stated that his father had died intestate and left heirs, who were now agreed to having the land evaluated and to whom Jacob had given security to hold the land. In consideration of this, the patent v/as granted that date (Patent Book a-14“44)«

Jacob Hamish and his brotbe r Michael v/ere the administrators of their father*s estate. The inventory is dated February 13, 1?44A5 and, lists the usual household goods, some Bibles and an Interesting entry, "ould lithos" perhaps some old lithographs he possessed.

The releases of the executors in the estate were signs d and dated as follows: October 27, 1847 - Stephen Liess and wife Anna, 60 pounds; March 25, 1754 Michael^ Hamish, one of the joint administrators; October 22, 1766 - Martin Hamish,

The Background and Family of Martin Harnish ( 1- 1 )

Little can be said about the European home of Martin Harnish « A vague tradition identifies it as Wurttemberg? and there are recasts of a Harnish family in Zweibriicken? a nearby German province. One Johannes Harnisch, age 2 lp, a vinedresser, and son, age 2? are listed as emigrants from this place in a list of Palatines taken at Walworth, May 27? 1709? who v/ent to America. There seems to be no known connection with Martin here, and it should be remembered that conditions were unfavor¬ able for Mennonites at this tiros and there was much moving about, with few records kept by these people. The name, it might be mentioned, means harness or armour and was likely applied to one vho made these things.

A haphazs.rd guess as to Martin Harnish5 s birthdate would place it in the late 1690' s or early 17005s. Quite likely some of his children were minors at the time of his death in Probably he came to America a young married man with perhaps one or two children.

The petition of his son Jacob to the Penns identifies Martin’s wife as Magdalena and lists seven children.

Of the children of Martin Harnish, other than the eldest son Jacob, little Is known.

2-2 Mi c ha e 1 Harnish was listed in a 17.51 Conestoga Assess¬ ment . On December 7? 1754-5 he purchased Ip acres from Michael and Barbara Hess in Conestoga Township (D-uJLl? Lancaster County deeds) . On April 2, 1756? he purchased from Jacob Loghman 8l acres for 165 pounds (II, p. 224)0 This was along the Pequea Creek in Mar-tic Townshlc. This tract he sold to George Ross on February lip? 1763 (D-l-Ij.25 ) . He seems to have sold this same tract to John Good on May 2, 1757? and bought it back May 10, 1757# as shown in the same references.

With Martin Kendrick he purchased an imposing collection of furniture and household goods from Michael Corrigan on November 27? 1756° These included a !fsorrel gelding” with a blaze in his face? a clasp knife, iron pots, iron frying pan? a round cherry tree table, hoes? axes? spinning wheels? a walnut chest? a pop¬ lar chest? a bedstead? chaff beds and so forth. (E-l-139 ) . With his brother Jacob he bought John W’ade 1 s warrant on July 24? 17&4* CM-209.)

A bond in his estate was made in 1769? when he likely died, and his brother Jacob, his administrator, made the inventory on

-5-

July 28, 1769* listing various personal possessions. The records identify him as a farmer in Conestoga Township, but never list a wife or other heirs. It seems likely he died, a bachelor;

2— Ip Martin Hamish married Catharine - -, and had a son

3-1 Andrew Harnish^ born August 1, 1759 > baptized August 5>

17^9 , at First Reformed Church, Lancaster. He likely left the county, for there is no further record of him or his descent*

It seems possible that 2-5 Barbara Harnish Hockman and 2-6 Anna Liess left descendants, although it is probable that 2-3 Christian Hamish and 2-7 Mary Harnish, the remaining two children left no heirs. In fact, since the estate of Martin, the father, was divided into five portions, they may likely have been dead before final partition was made.

Two Other Hamish Immigrants

Jacob Harnish, possibly a brother of Martin Harnish, settled at an early date in Lampeter Township. He was naturalized in September, 17l{-3> and was taxed as early as 1720-21 in Lampeter Township. He made a wi 1 1 on January 29, 17lp9/50 in which he listed three children: John, Anna, and Jacob. Little is known of this family, except that John married Barbara Kniesly, daughter of Ham Kniesly of Hempfield Township and moved to York County, vhere he seems to have had numerous pro~en^ which very early scattered in a numoer of western Pennsylvania Counties. John was taxed in Lampeter Township in 1751*

Samuel Harnish ( I70J4.-- June , 1789 ) came to America, arriving at Philadelphia September 21, 1732, and settled at Cocalico Township, Lancaster County. He was of the Reformed faith and left a large number of descendants, about whom Rev. Francis gathered extensive data which exists in unorganized notes and manuscripts .

2-1 JACOB HARNISH

Jacob Harnish, tho eldest son of Martin Hamish, the immigrant , was probably born in the early 1720’s and died October lip, 1799*

There is no record yet discovered giving the name of his wife or

wives .

He inherited from his father a 225-acro tract which became the nucleus of a total of over 700 acres he held at the time of his death. With one exception this land was in Conestoga Township, where Jacob was taxed as early as 1751 and spent the remainder of his days. On February 25, 1755? He took a patent, as John Jacob Harnish, of 136 acres in Lampeter Township and on May 23, 1755 purchased 50 acres from Michael and Barbara Hess in Conestoga Township. This tract he seems to have made into his homestead, and the additional tracts he purchased were tenanted or farmed by his sons. These lands include:

1. 90 acres vh. os e warrant he bought with his brother Michael on July 2l|.s 176!}.. The patent was granted to Jacob, the sole survivor on March 13, 1793* This land was named the ’’Coach". (Patent Book A-19-218, Harrisburg Land Office)

2. 50 acres bought from Jacob Blaser and wife Christina on April 2]p, 1764. (Lancaster County deeds, H-231)

3e 118 acres from John Sternman on August 20, 1774 (S-37)

4* 25 acres from Jacob Hess and Catharine on April 23, 1785 (DD-I60)

5. 107 acres from John Mus ser on May 1789 (HH-230)

6* 58 acres, named "Plainfield," by patent dated March 13,

1793. (Patent Book A-19-2I9.)

These extended holdings identify him as a wealthy landowner of early Conestoga Township. He is listed as an Overseer of the Poor there in 1755 and 1789 and was undoubtedly Mennonite. is reputed, according to family legend (told to Rev. Francis, the original compiler of this history in 1926 by Abraham Warfel Harnish, a great-grandson of the Jacob in question), to have "lived his last days alone in a hut at River Corner, about a mile (west) from Conestoga Center; that he was poor and that when his son David became rich, David invited his father to live with him, but in vain. People at night, clad ghostlike in sheets, tried to frighten the old man in his lonely hut. All that their efforts wrought was to bring these vrords from him whom they sought to terrify: ’If they come In white, they are good spirits; but if in black, they - are evil spirits. 5 "

Some of this story— particularly that Jacob was poor must be discounted, but the fact remains that he died at perhaps nearly 80 years of age, possessed of over 700 acres of land, and left no

will.

Thus his son John petitioned the Orphans Court on June 30, 1800, listing the holdings and asking that the court appoint an

-7-

inquest to value and divide the holdings among the five children. The return order satisfied this request, and five tracts were' set up, with an equalization made between the brothers and sisters.

Jacob Harnish was buried in the little family cemetery on a hill overlooking his farm. Many of his descendants, in marked and unnarked graves, lie there with him<>

The Descendants of Jacob Harnish

It was the descendants of this Harnish who propagated the name in southern Lancaster County where it is a widespread one today. As can be seen from the above sketch, Jacob Harnish held extensive amounts of land 0 Typically Pennsylvania Dutch, his sons held their large estates in land. By the time the grandsons of old Jacob began farming, there was no new land: the old holdings were parcelled out and the new generation had to fan out into other sections of Lancaster County, into other counties of Pennsylvania and eventually Into other states.

Farming was the family occupation (and is still that of many descendants) and the Mennonite faith the religion of these people; but there were ministers, lawyers, professors, business and professional men among the freindschaf t , and they became Lutheran, Reformed, Methodist, Fresbyterian and Episcopalian as they merged more fully into the vast American culture.

But there is one thing every descendant of Jacob Harnish should do, and that is to go to Lancaster County and stand on the hill on the homestead where he lies buried or near the church at River Corner and drink in the panorama which Jacob and his sons saw daily. This panorama, and the rich, annually productive soil, which yielded sustenance for them as it yields now for their descendants, are symbolic of the faith and spirit in which they lived.

3-1 John Harnish

John Ham i sh. the eldest son of Jacob Harnlsh (d. 1799) > of whom there is record, v/as likely bom about 1746. His 'wife’s name v/as Anna, maiden name unknown, so recorded on the date- - stone of their house, in various deeds, and in John’s will.

John made his hone of the 136-acre tract of land which was patented to his father by Thomas and Richard Perm in 1755* seems to have carved the home and farm here, for his father’s residence v/as in Conestoga Township and this tract lies entirely in Lampeter'. It was assigned to him on the death of his father, along with other property. The farm borders on Mill Creek and Is owned today by Attorney Martin M. Harnish, of Lancaster, the descendant of one of John’s brothers.

A small stone house, of the type erected by the early set¬ tlers of Lancaster County before they completed their large, limestone farmhouses stands on the property. This building con¬ tains three floors: the bottommost has a spring and oven and v/as likely the kitchens the second, a large room with fireplace, and the top, a loft. Probably John and Anna lived here the first years of their marriage .

In 1774 they erected a home in the finest tradition, with squared, hewn stones and a carved date stone with this inscription:

Erbauet durch

Built by

JOHA!TT!ES

John

Harnish and his wife Anna H.

in the year 1774

HARNISCH und seiner Frau Anna H. im Jahr 1774

This home v/as ample to raise a family, and, later on, to house three of four generations of Harnishes at once. It re¬ mained in John’s direct lineal descent until the early 1900’s.

That John v/as a v/ell-to°do farmer is attested by the size of his estate. On May 7 5 1806, he transferred the larger part of his farm to his son Jacob in return for 1700 pounds and agree¬ ment to care for him and his wife. He held and sold other tracts in Lancaster County. A Shreiner clock, believed to have been his, was handed down through his descendants until recently.

The militia lists bear his name during the Revolutionary War period and afterwards, but as a Mermonite, he likely new r served in that war©

His death probably occurred in November, 1829 } when his will was probated, his wife dying before final settlement in 1831. They were probably buried in the little graveyard on the farm, vhere their daughter Veronica lay. No tombstone has been discovered at their graves and no records have been found of the exact date of their deaths.

John’s will , made in l8l5, provided that his wife Ann receive the interest from frlOOO annually during her lifetime, and that each of his children, except John, receive an equal share of his estate. To John was given a half share. His' son Martin was named executor, but in a codicil dated 1817 another son Jacob was named executor. However, Jacob’s sons Michael and Jacob served as their father was dead by 1829*

3~2 Michael Harnish

Michael Harnish, 3econd son of Jacob IIarni3h (d. 1799) was likely born about I7I4-S be married Barbara (Stohrcan ?) and died about December, IS06, when his will was probated.

He is believed to have farmed land on tho road between Cones¬ toga Center and New Danville in Conestoga Township, whore the Harnish graveyard is located. This was likely also the homestead of his father and grandfather. Ho was an overseer of the poor in 1790 and is listed in militia lists, but, as a Monnonite, ho likely never sorvod.

His will, written in June lS05, provided for tho care of his widow and permitted her to occupy the wooden part of his dwelling, with his son Jacob to care for her. His home plantation he bequeathed to his son Jacob and left farms to his sons Joseph, Abraham and Rudolph, with the balance to be shared by all his children, with his sons Jacob and Abraham the executors.

His wife made her will in I82I4. and died the next year. They are likely buried in tho Harnish graveyard on the farm mentioned .

He seems to have been first married to Anna Greider, daughter of Michael Greider, for Michael Harnish was tho administrator of Anna Greider .Harnish in 1031*

3-3 Jacob Harnish

Jacob Harnish. third son of Jacob Harnish (d. 1799), was born in 1730, according to his tombstone in the River Corner ‘-fcnnonite Cemetery. He married, first, Esther Bilrk- holder, daughter of John Burkholder; and second, Susannah

- . Hi 3 first wife was born October 22, 1759 and died

December 6, 1786, agod 27 years, 1 month and two weeks.

His second wife was born November 13, 1767, and died January ^1* I8I4.I0 They are buried with him at River Corner.

He farmed on of the farms his father had held in Conestoga -township, likely west of Conestoga Center, near the Susquehanna River. Tradition tells that his first wife was buried on the farm and later removed to the River Corner Church.

Like his brothers John and Michael, his name occurs on the militia lists during the Revolution, but also like them he was a Mennonite and probably never served.

He had children by both wives and died, at the age °q ?n ^overrl8er Hj 181j.2. His will, made August 2o, I832, listed his children and in several cases grand¬ children, the offspring of children he had survived. He left extensive property.

The numbering system used here is the key to identifying your ancestry. After you have found your own naira, work backwards from the first number in front of it, using the next lowest number appearing immediately ahead of it, and so forth back to the original immigrant*

Sources

Rev. Francis does not always identify sources in his notes; and the editors have added data from Tn

we may make tne statement that Rev. Francis compiled his data primarily . from the will records of Lancaster County and from conversations with descendants. He also consulted the Herr family history. Since most of his data was taken directly from the person it concerned, we have indicated sources where this is not true. The editors have consulted tombstone records and the deed records of Lancaster County, well as the patent books of the state land office.

100 copies of this history were printed for distribution and are available at $1.00 a copy from Frederick S. Weiser Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. 1
